Firmware Installation Instructions
Install User File (Hitch Mode)
You can upgrade firmware for Hitch units by downloading the latest version from our website. You can also download other programs to run on the Hitch unit.
To download firmware upgrades for Hitch products:
- Go to www.gethitch.com and download the firmware version called hitch_install.exe.
- 2. After the download is complete go to the directory or folder you saved the file too and run it on your computer by double clicking on it.
- A window should prompt you to "install". Press install to start extracting the file.
- Upon completion you will notice a new folder was created called hitch_install.
- Copy this new folder called hitch_install to a USB Mass storage device such as a thumb drive or iPod*. The hitch_install folder must be located at the root of the USB Mass Storage device.
- Connect the device to the HERE side of the Hitch unit. Make sure the AC power is
supplied to the Hitch.
Note: The file installation can only be completed with the device connected to the HERE side and the Hitch unit must be in Hitch mode. - Go to the Main menu by pressing and holding down the SELECT button. Use the scroll wheel to highlight Settings and press the SELECT button. Scroll down to select the Install User File.
- Press the SELECT button
Note: If the AC adapter is not connected, you cannot enter the Install User File menu. Please connect AC adapter to continue.
The Hitch unit will automatically download the necessary files to complete the firmware upgrade.
The actual upgrade is not complete at this time. To complete the upgrade proceed to the Run User Program.
Run User Program
Run User Program will run user applications compiled specifically for the Hitch. One major use of this feature is to execute the application necessary to update the firmware on your Hitch unit.
- Go to the Settings menu and press the SELECT button to advance to the Main menu.
- Turn the scroll wheel clockwise to select Run User File.
- Press the SELECT button. The files loaded during the Install User File step will be displayed.
- Highlight the file "update_y061016" and press the SELECT button to begin the file transfer.
- The application selected will begin to execute.
- In the case of a firmware update, the AC power jack MUST be connected in order for the update application to proceed. DO NOT disconnect the USB drive or the AC power during the update process.
The screen will display a Copy files progress bar followed by a Checking files screen and an Updating files screen.
Upon completing the file transfer, the Hitch unit will proceed to shut itself down. You will see a Shutting down countdown screen after which the unit will power off.
When powered up, the Hitch unit will have the new firmware or program installed.
*You can now proceed to install the MTP firmware on the Hitch. Please continue to follow this next set of installation instructions.
MTP Firmware Installation Instructions
To download firmware upgrades for Hitch products:

- After the download is complete go to the directory or folder you saved the file too and run it on your computer by double clicking on it.
- A window should prompt you to "install". Press install to start extracting the file.
- Upon completion you will notice a new file was created called hitch_update.bin.
- Copy this new file called hitch_update.bin to a USB Mass storage device such as a thumb drive or iPod*. The hitch_update.bin file must be located at the root of the USB Mass Storage device.
- Connect the device to the HERE side of the Hitch unit. Make sure the AC power is supplied to the Hitch.
Note: The file installation can only be completed with the device connected to the HERE side and the Hitch unit must be in Hitch mode. - Go to the Main menu by pressing and holding down the SELECT button. Use the scroll wheel to highlight Settings and press the SELECT button. Using the scroll wheel again highlight Update and press SELECT.
The screen will display a Copy files progress bar followed by a Checking files screen and an Updating files screen.
Upon completing the file transfer, the Hitch unit will proceed to shut itself down. You will see a Powering Off progress bar screen after which the unit will power off.
When powered up, the Hitch unit will have the new MTP firmware installed.
